Large parts of Cyprus were plunged into darkness after what appeared to be an explosion at the Vasiliko Power Station in Moni, bringing memories of last year’s fatal explosion at Mari.

A fire broke out at Vasiliko after an overload in the system at around 1 am, cutting power to many parts of Cyprus while the blaze was being extinguished. Technicians from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus were able to restore most of the loss in generation by 1.45.

There are no indications that the fire was caused deliberately.
