A massive fire at the Machkund Hydropower Project near Jeypore in the Koraput district of Odisha, India has disrupted power generation and left more than 20 villages without electricity.

The fire is reported to have caused considerable damage and badly affected the project’s infrastructure. Out of six turbines at the plant, two have been severely damaged and are not usable. Officials say restoration work is underway, but that repairing the damaged units and bringing the plant back to normal operation could take up to six months.

With temperatures remaining high across the state, the disruption has added to the difficulties resulting from increased power demand in the affected area. Authorities are working to restore power through alternative arrangements.
