A boiler explosion at the 1200 MW coal-fired power plant in Chhattisgarh, India operated by Vedanta has resulted in 19 fatalities and multiple injuries.
The explosion occurred on 14 April 2026 during routine operations. Initial reports confirmed a number of fatalities and injuries, with the death toll currently standing at 19. Operations at the plant have been suspended following the incident.
The incident is believed to have originated within a boiler system, with indications suggesting a failure involving high-pressure steam equipment.
Vedanta has initiated an internal investigation into the incident. Authorities at state and local level have also ordered formal inquiries, including a magisterial investigation, to examine the circumstances of the incident and adherence to safety requirements.
