Eskom of South Africa has announced that it is inviting large industrial users to buy solar electricity directly from the utility.
Eskom is offering long-term PPAs ranging from five to 25 years, with the first projects scheduled to go live by the end of 2027. This places Eskom in direct competition with private renewable energy companies. The move signals a shift away from coal, which currently provides over 80 per cent of Eskom’s power generation.
Eskom plans to launch a dedicated renewable energy division, aiming for 2 GW of ready-to-build projects by 2026, scaling up to 32 GW, including green hydrogen, by 2040.
The deadline for solar power proposals is 19 September.
