Eskom , the state-owned electric utility of South Africa, has announced that the final 800 MW unit as the Kusile coal-fired power plant has been commissioned and connected to the national grid.
The commissioning represents the completion of Eskom’s much-delayed construction programme for the Kusile and Medupi coal-fired plants, each with six 800 MW units providing a combined capacity of 9.6 GW. The plants started construction in 2007, with completion scheduled for 2014. Both plants are designed for an expected operational life of 50 years.
