Erex of Japan and Vinacomin Power Holdings of Vietnam have signed an MOU to study the possibility of cofiring biomass at two of Vinacomin’s coal-fired power plants.
The two plants are the 55 MW Na Duong Power Plant and the 57.5 MW Cao Ngan Power Plant. The companies have already carried out cofiring tests at these two plants; the test at Na Duong achieved 20 per cent cofiring with wood chips while the test at Cao Ngan achieved 30 per cent cofiring with wood pellets.
Erex and Vinacomin said that they are now considering the feasibility of commercial-scale cofiring at the two facilities.
According to Erex, electricity demand in Vietnam is increasing at 10 per cent annually, and approximately half of the country’s power generation comes from coal-fired facilities. Vietnam has a target of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, and part of achieving that goal involves a policy of cofiring biomass and ammonia at coal-fired facilities that have been operational for 20 years or more.
