Roma Capitale, Enel Green Power (EGP) and ENEA have signed a memorandum of understanding for the testing and development of new technologies for generating zero CO2 emissions electricity from renewable sources. EGP has said that it will construct a concentrating solar power and biomass plant as part of this agreement.
According to EGP: “The molten salts system will allow the plant to generate electricity in the absence of sunlight. Locally produced biomass will also be transformed into biogas to integrate with the supply from the solar power plant, and into biofuel to power urban public transport.”
EGP said that the Trebios plant will be a small-scale, modular, polygeneration concentrated solar power plant that will ensure the continuous production of 1-5 MW, and it will process steam, as well as integrate the renewable resources of sunlight and biomass available from the municipal area. The biomass will initially be treated with the process steam generated by the plant to separate its components, including lignin, which can be used in gaseous form in the auxiliary molten salts heater to support electricity generation in the absence of sunlight, providing about 40 percent of the total.
