Mustafa Madbouli, Prime Minister of Egypt, has announced that as a result of the war in Iran revealing the vulnerability of oil and gas supplies, Egypt will increase the proportion of renewables in its energy mix.
This will include launching an initiative to enable factories to generate solar power on their roofs, aiming to convert the roofs of 7000 factories – 10 per cent of Egypt’s industrial base – into decentralised solar power plants generating a combined 1 GW.
The initiative is designed with each factory installing a modest solar setup with an average capacity of 150 kW, though larger factories might install larger systems.
Osama Kamal, head of Egypt’s Senate Energy Committee, said that this size makes connecting the solar plants to the national grid simple and secures stable supplies. He said that the economic incentive was compelling for factories with daytime-heavy operations, suitable roof space, and exposure to rising electricity tariffs.
