Egypt has announced a new collaboration between the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) and an Egyptian-Japanese consortium to build a combined 20 MW solar power plant and a 30 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hurghada on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
The consortium includes Japan’s Yurtec Corporation and Solar Installer, and Egypt’s Redcon Construction .
NREA said that the plant is expected to generate 48 GWh annually, with solar generation supplying 36 GWh and the BESS 12 GWh.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will supervise the project.
In addition to power generation, the project aims to develop local technical capacity. A proposed training centre will educate engineers and technicians in solar systems, battery management, and sustainable operations. The facility will also serve as a model for hybrid energy solutions in coastal and desert areas.
