EDP of Portugal has commissioned a hybrid generation project that combines a 48 MW solar power plant with the existing 41 MW Pracana Hydropower Plant in Portugal. This is the first of its type for the company.
The new 89 MW facility has 90 000 solar panels.
The hydropower element of the facility has been operating since 1951.
This is EDP’s first hybrid renewable energy project using these two technologies, and it is also Portugal’s first such project.
The solar plant is expected to produce 87 GWh annually.
Pedro Vasconcelos, Executive Board Member with EDP, said: “Pracana is another milestone in our strategy. By combining hydropower and onshore solar, we reinforce system stability, accelerate the energy transition, and reduce territorial impact.”
