Medina said that Ecuador will receive $400 million from Power China as part of the settlement while retaining ownership of the plant.

The plant was built in 2016 by China’s Sinohydro Corporation , a hydropower contracting unit of Power China. Since coming online, the plant has faced repeated technical issues. Ecuador started international arbitration in 2021 against Sinohydro due to cracks and technical issues in the infrastructure. The arbitration awarded compensation of $400 million.

Under the terms of the deal, Power China will take over the administration, operation, and maintenance of the Coca Codo Sinclair plant for 25 years.
