Dangote Industries said it will build a 1000 MW petroleum coke (petcoke) fired power plant at its planned refinery in Lamu, Kenya. Half of the electricity – 500 MW – will be sold to the Kenyan government.

The planned power plant will form part of the wider Lamu refinery and petrochemical complex, which is scheduled to have a crude-processing capacity of 700 000 barrels per day. Dangote said the 1000 MW power plant would provide electricity for the Lamu refinery while creating additional capacity that can be supplied to Kenya’s power system.

The project has been reported as being valued at $15-17 billion, and construction is due to take three years, although the company has not confirmed these estimates.

Petcoke is a carbon-rich solid material produced during the oil-refining process. It is formed when heavier petroleum residues are further processed and can be used as a fuel in industrial power generation because of its high carbon content.
