Congo to double capacity to 1.5 GW by 2030

The Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Energy has announced that the country plans to double its power generation capacity to over 1.5 GW by 2030, largely through the development of renewable energy projects.

The ministry also stated that the government had already identified 4 GW of hydropower potential in the Brazzaville region, and around 27 GW across the entire country. Power generation projects will also be diversified with solar and gas-fired projects, such as AMEA ’s 50 MW solar power project near Brazzaville or Wing Wah’s 400 MW gas-fired power project.

As of the end of 2023, the Republic of Congo had a total installed capacity of about 830 MW. Of this, 603 MW (73 per cent) was gas-fired, 214 MW (26 per cent) was hydropower, and 12 MW (1 per cent) was biomass-fired.
