The Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) has announced that it has issued a Letter of Interest to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to develop a 300 MW imported coal-fired power plant in Gwadar, a port city in Balochistan. The project is part of the $57 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), comprising scores of energy and infrastructure projects.

CCCC will now seek tariff approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), and will start construction work after financial close. CPEC’s Joint Cooperation Committee and the PPIB board have already approved the power project for further processing.

With the addition of the 300 MW Gwadar project, PPIB has increased the number of power generation projects it is processing under CPEC to nine coal-based projects totalling 8220 MW, and three hydroelectric projects totalling 2714 MW.
