JA Solar has announced that it is delivering 1 GW of DeepBlue 4.0 elevated solar panels for the 2 GW Suji Sandland solar project in Inner Mongolia in northern China.
The Suji Sandland project is using elevated solar panels to create shade, reduce evaporation, promote the growth of sand-fixing plants, and help restore areas undergoing desertification. Desertification is a severe environmental issue in Inner Mongolia, with the advance of the Gobi Desert threatening pasture, agricultural areas, and rural communities.
Elevated solar panels absorb part of the radiation that would directly heat the soil as well as block extreme sun exposure for plants. Soil temperature can be 10°C to 15°C lower beneath elevated panels compared to exposed areas during peak heat periods. This difference reduces evaporation, preserves moisture and creates a microclimate more suited for the germination of drought-resistant species.
