The Chinese state-owned CHN Energy has said that it has achieved a technological breakthrough that allows for a 50 per cent green hydrogen blend in coal-fired power generation, achieving 100 per cent hydrogen combustion.
China is looking for viable pathways to meet its dual carbon targets of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060.
The system is powered by a low nitrogen hydrogen-coal co-firing burner. The technology ensures that hydrogen and pulverised coal are thoroughly mixed and burned within the boiler, achieving a 50 per cent hydrogen blending ratio by heat value in the experimental facility.
CHN Energy said that widespread adoption could reduce coal consumption and carbon emissions by up to 50 per cent, as well as achieve effective control of nitrogen oxide emissions.
