A joint venture of Mingyang Hydrogen and Shenzhen Energy has constructed a 30 MW turbine that will run on 100 per cent hydrogen in the Otoke High-Tec Industrial Development Zone in Ordos, northern China. The project is part of the Ejingke wind-solar-hydrogen integrated green ammonia project.
Other companies like Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Siemens have previously demonstrated 100 per cent hydrogen turbines, but this project is the first to link a turbine of this scale with large-scale renewables and on-site storage, creating a closed-loop system.
Surplus renewable electricity will be use to generate hydrogen through electrolysis, which will be stored in twelve 1875 m3 spherical storage tanks. When renewable output is less than demand, the stored hydrogen will be used to generate electricity.
The project includes a 500 MW wind capacity and a 5 MW off-grid solar PV array. It has 240 MW of electrolysers capable of generating 4.3 tonnes of hydrogen per hour. The plant also has the capacity to produce 150 000 tonnes of green ammonia annually.
