Cenal Elektrik Üretim , a joint venture of Cengiz Holding and Alarko Holding, has submitted an application to the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation, and Climate Change to expand its 1320 MW Cenal coal-fired power plant in Biga, Çanakkale in northwestern Türkiye with a new 1050 MW coal-fired power unit.
The existing 1.3 GW power plant secured a production licence in 2013 and currently generates 9.9 TWh/year. Environmental groups have already challenged this power plant, but the plant was granted a positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) has accepted the request to add a third unit and to increase the production licence by 1050 MW, on the condition that the project receives EIA approval.
