The Cameroon Government has announced a competitive bidding process for the EPC of the 500 MW Kikot-Mbébé hydropower plant, located 60 km northwest of Yaoundé, in central Cameroon.
The hydropower plant, located on the Sanaga River, will feature six Kaplan turbines, each with a capacity of 83.3 MW. Construction is scheduled to start in 2025, with commissioning expected in 2030.
The €1 billion project is being developed by Kikot-Mbébé Hydropower Company (KHPC), a joint venture equally owned by the State of Cameroon and EDF .
As of the end of 2023, hydropower represented around 45 per cent of Cameroon’s installed capacity, with 812 MW, and it accounted for around 60 per cent of the country’s generation. It has been estimated that Cameroon has 23 GW of potential hydropower capacity that can be developed under good economic conditions.
