Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Energy Minister, said that Toronto’s current electricity system is expected to reach capacity in the 2030s and the province needs to act now to meet future demand.

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) recommended the creation of an underwater line in order to build a system able to handle extreme weather events, such as flooding or ice storms.

Leece said that loss of power during major weather events has cost Toronto nearly C$200 million in lost productivity. He said: “We can do better, and that’s why we believe the underwater cable will deliver more capacity than any other option.”

The project is scheduled for completion in 2037.
