BC Hydro buys gas-fired power generation facility on Vancouver Island

BC Hydro has announced that it has acquired the 275 MW Island Generation in Campbell River, Vancouver Island, Canada, a natural gas-fired facility, to provide peak power for Vancouver Island.

Ajay Kumar, Senior Vice President, Integrated Planning for BC Hydro, said: “Through this acquisition. We expect the operations of the facility will continue in a similar fashion as for the same number of days over the coming years. The acquisition of Island Generation does not replace our commitment to renewables.” He said that Island Generation will operate for around 15 days a year, on a par with its average over the last five years.
Kumar said this partnership goes hand-in-hand with other investments being made or planned by the utility to increase power stability. He said: “We will continue to advance our investments in battery storage, transmission upgrades, and generation upgrades as we move forward to ensure we can provide clean, reliable energy for our customers.”
