The Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said that the prospective public-private partnership would develop, build, and operate an initial 40 MW thorium-fuelled simple, high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor.

The project is planned to start by the middle of 2024, with construction to be completed by 2027, according to the DTI. The DTI added that this project was expected to generate 1000 local jobs during construction.

The DTI said: “Further, the system will also be able to produce green hydrogen for transport, desalinated water as a byproduct, and gamma radiation as a byproduct to allow long-term storage of food products.”
