India’s Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGenco) has announced that it is planning to add 3210 MW to its total capacity over the next 2 years. K Vijayanand, MD of APGenco, said that: “APGenco, the third largest power generating utility in India, fulfils around 57 percent of the electricity requirements of the state of Andhra Pradesh. We are now planning to add an additional 3210 MW in the coming two years, of which 2800 MW will be coal-based and 410 MW hydroelectric.

According to APGenco, the Andhra Pradesh government has adopted various short- and medium-term measures to provide reliable power supply to the state’s industrial sector. The state has approved proposals from APTransco to purchase additional power for the short-term, from mid-January to the end of May 2012. Distribution companies in Andhra Pradesh expect to purchase around 1000 MW of additional capacity to meet demand.

Under the medium-term measures, from June 2012 to May 2016, the state power utilities plan to purchase around 2000 MW of additional power.

In addition, the state has introduced the Feeder Segregation Project scheme on a pilot basis in order to provide three-phase power supply to rural areas, to encourage medium- and small-scale industries in rural areas, and to reduce the urban/rural areas disparities. Dinesh Kumar, Principal Secretary of Energy for the Andhra Pradesh state government, said: “The project is also aimed at creating employment in rural areas.”
