Amazon has announced plans for a 960 MW nuclear power facility in Indiana, USA that will consist of 12 SMRs at the site of a former coal-fired power plant.
It has signed an agreement with American Electric Power (AEP) and X-energy . If built, the facility would supply electricity to Amazon’s data centres, with any excess going to the regional grid.
The proposed plant would use 12 Xe-100 reactors from X-energy, each designed to generate 80 MW. Amazon will help fund project development. If approved, the facility would be located at the former Breed Generating Station site in Sullivan County, Indiana.
If the Xe-100 SMR receives regulatory approval, it will use TRISO fuel, which X-energy claims will provide passive safety characteristics to prevent core melting.
