AES Indiana to shut down coal-fired units by 2025

AES Corp has announced that its subsidiary AES Indiana will cease using coal as a fuel source by 2025, which will involve closing the coal-fired units at its Petersburg Generating Station in Indiana, USA. AES Corp said: “To continue to accelerate the future of energy, we are announcing our intent to exit coal generation by the end of 2025.” Previously, it had expected to reduce coal to 10 per cent as a source of fuel by the end of 2025.

The 1700 MW Petersburg plant is about 120 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

The Indiana General Assembly has passed legislation to allow utilities to build SMRs, including installation at closed coal-fired plants. The legislation is awaiting approval from the state Governor. AES Indiana has not said whether it plans to install an SMR at Petersburg, although it has said that it is keeping a close eye on SMR technology.
