Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power announced that it has started construction of three wind power plants with a combined capacity of 1.5 GW in the Karakalpakstan region of Uzbekistan as part of a renewable energy project valued at around $3 billion.
The project includes a 300 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), about 1500 km of high voltage transmission lines, three 500 kV switching substations, and the modernisation and upgrading of two existing substations.
The facilities are scheduled to be commissioned in Q1 2027.
The projects are expected to generate 8.77 TWh annually, supporting Uzbekistan’s efforts to expand renewable energy generation and diversify its power mix.
