According to a report from Eurostat , in 2025, 47.3 per cent of the electricity generated in the EU came from renewable energy systems. This is a slight increase from 2024, when the share of renewable energy in electricity generation was 47.2 per cent.
Wind was the primary source of renewable electricity in the EU, accounting for 37.5 per cent of the total. Solar generated 27.5 per cent of renewable energy, followed by hydro with 25.9 per cent. The remaining renewable electricity came from combustible renewable fuels (8.5 per cent) and geothermal and other energy sources (0.5 per cent).
Solar power was the fastest growing source in 2025, with an annual increase of 24.6 per cent. In contrast, electricity generation from hydropower fell by 11.8 per cent.
Denmark (92.4 per cent), Austria (83.1 per cent), and Portugal (82.9 per cent) had the highest shares of electricity from renewable sources, while the lowest shares were in Malta (16.2 per cent), Czechia (16.6 per cent) and Slovakia (17.8 per cent).
