China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced that the 1126 MW Zhangzhou 1 nuclear power plant in Fujian province, China, has started commercial operation on 1 January 2025.
Zhangzhou 2 is scheduled to start operation later this year. Both units use the HPR-1000 reactor. China also plans to add two extra units – Zhangzhou 3 and 4 – at the site, and CNNC said preliminary work has begun on Zhangzhou 5 and 6.
According to the China Nuclear Energy Association , Zhangzhou is the starting point for mass construction of the HPR-1000. IAEA data states that there are 18 HPR-1000 units either under construction or in operation in China. Construction of an HPR-1000 has also started at Chasnupp 5 nuclear power plant in Pakistan.
