World’s renewable energy capacity passed 3 TW in 2021

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) announced in its annual statistical report that renewables accounted for 38.3 per cent of global electricity generation capacity at the end of 2021, reaching 3.06 TW.

Hydropower accounted for the largest share, with 1.23 TW. Solar increased by 19 per cent over the year, reaching 849 GW, while wind increased by 13 per cent to reach 825 GW. The Global Wind Energy Council predicts that wind power will pass 1 TW global capacity during the second half of 2023.

The world added 9.1 per cent (257 GW), passing 3 TW to reach 3.06 TW. The 2 TW milestone was hit in 2016. The share of green capacity in total global power expansion hit 81 per cent over 2021.
