Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Energy, said: “Just over two years ago, we committed to move forward with this project, and I’m pleased to announce the start of construction. This project will provide clean, reliable, affordable power while benefitting the local and regional economies.”

Coral Rapids Power is wholly owned by the Taykwa Tagamou Nation, which hopes to fill many of the anticipated 220 jobs associated with the Sutherland project’s construction with First Nation members. The plant is due to be completed in 2018.

TTN Chief Dwight Sutherland said: “We are excited to partner with OPG on this project. OPG has a proven track record of partnering with First Nation communities. We wanted to work with them on this project, which will provide lasting economic opportunities for the people of Taykwa Tagamou Nation.”

Ontario Power Generation said that a partnership between Kiewit and Aecon had been selected as the design-build contractors through a competitive process.
