Wind energy in the US state of Texas accounted for more than 10 per cent on the grid in 2014, according to grid operator the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). This has been the result of sustained growth in the market, which saw wind grow from 6.2 per cent in 2009 to 10.6 per cent.
Increased wind on the system is the result of new plants coming online and a grid expansion programme that has allowed more wind power to be delivered to consumers. With transmission constraints removed, more production from wind plants located in the northwestern part of the state can now reach the main population centres.
Wind generation in the ERCOT region nearly doubled from 18.8 million MWh in 2009 to 36.1 million MWh in 2014.
