Vattenfall is undertaking a pilot study to examine construction of SMRs in Sweden to meet increased demand for electricity. It is looking to build at least two SMRs adjacent to Ringhals nuclear power plant, located on the Värö Peninsula, 65km south of Gothenburg.
The study will examine the requirements needed to develop the SMRs and bring them into operation by the early 2030s.
Vattenfall is allowed to replace the two reactors Ringhals 1 and 2 that have been shut down. The required grid infrastructure is already in place, simplifying connection of new power generation.
Anna Borg, CEO of Vattenfall, said: “We will need all fossil-free energy sources to meet the increasing demand for electricity in Sweden. We want to investigate the conditions for building small modular reactors in the vicinity of Ringhals nuclear power plant.”
