Uttar Pradesh to generate 5255 MW from 10 new coal-fired power plants

The government of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has announced that it will increase power generation by approximately 5225 MW through 10 new coal-fired power plants over the next three years, in a bid to make the state self-reliant in electricity production.

The ten new power plants include:

  • 660 MW Obra C Unit 2, scheduled to enter operations in September 2024.
  • 660 MW Jawaharpur Unit 2, scheduled to enter operation in July 2024.
  • 561 MW Ghatampur Unit 1, scheduled to enter operation in July 2024.
  • 660 MW Panki Unit, scheduled to start July 2024.
  • 561 MW Ghatampur Unit 2, to start operations December 2024.
  • 561 MW Ghatampur Unit 3, to start operations in 2025.
  • 396 MW Khurja Unit 1, to start operations by May 2025.
  • 396 MW Khurja Unit 2, to start operations by May 2025.

The government aims to also expand the capacity at three existing units: Obra D-2 will be increased to 1600 MW, Anpara E-2 to 1600 MW, and Meja 2 to 1920 MW.
