US DOE allocates funds for hydropower research

The US Department of Energy ’s (DOE) Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) has announced funding of $1.7 million for research and development of hydropower and marine energy. This funding will support 16 hydropower projects and 12 marine energy projects in the USA.

Hydropower accounts for 28.7 per cent of total US renewable electricity generation and about 6.2 per cent of the country’s total electricity generation.

The projects announced are “Seedlings” funded under WPTO’s Seedlings and Saplings programme to encourage and support new and innovative research. Projects start as Seedlings and are eligible for up to $100,000.

These projects will take place at Idaho National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories.
