He said: “Under the national energy emergency, which President Trump has declared, we’ve got to keep every coal plant open. And if there are units at a coal plant that has been shut down, we have to bring those back.”

According to Global Energy Monitor , about 770 individual coal-fired units have been closed since 2000, because they were not economic to operate. An additional 120 plants are scheduled to shut down over the next five years because they are not able to compete with gas or renewables.

Chris Wright, US Energy Secretary, said that the administration was crafting a plan to prevent companies closing US coal-fired power plants.
