The $690 million project was started in 2006, and it is expected that, when fully operational, about half the output (380 MW) will be used within Assam, and the rest exported elsewhere in India.
Coal for the project is being sourced from the Margherita Area of North-Eastern Coal Fields Ltd (NECL), and from non-Raniganj coal sources of Eastern Coal Fields Ltd (ECL).
The project has been delayed through violent clashes between ethnic groups in the area over the last few years. The first unit had been due to come on line in 2014.
