Paul Polman, Unilever Chief Executive, is advocating business sustainability despite sales slowing. He is a part of a group of business leaders who want governments to commit to zero net emissions by 2050. Polman said: “If we don’t tackle climate change we won’t achieve economic growth. This is an issue for all businesses, not just Unilever. We all have to act.”

In 2010, Unilever had previously set an interim target for renewables to meet 40 per cent of its needs by 2020; under the new proposals this has now been revised to 50 per cent by 2020 and 100 per cent in 2030.

Unilever says that it has currently saved over $424 million from making its factories cleaner since 2008.
