Doubt has been cast over the future of the planned Moorside nuclear plant in Cumbria, UK, after all UK employees were put on notice of redundancy. About 100 jobs are under consultation at the NuGen project after plans to sell the firm were delayed after Westinghouse went bankrupt in March 2017. French company Engie pulled out of the joint venture a month later, due to “significant challenges” facing the joint venture.

Korea Electric Power Corporation was selected last year as the preferred bidder of Toshiba’s shares in the project but the sale, which was expected to be completed by April 2018, has been hit by delays which have prompted a review.

A spokesman for NuGen said: “Toshiba has pursued a sale of NuGen to KEPCO and the prolonged time it has taken to reach a conclusion has required NuGen to undertake a review. As such, additional options are being pursued for NuGen’s future direction to deliver the next generation of new nuclear build in the UK. It has been decided by the NuGen board to re-profile the organisation at this point in order to pursue alternatives.”
