The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) is planning to set up the solar power plants across the northern Emirates through a competitive tendering process that will see it partner with other firms to complete the work. Such an approach has typically kept prices of solar power projects very low, especially in the UAE.

This has been the case with other projects like the ACWA Power project in Saudi Arabia, which is working on a 200 MW project at a cost of 5.84ยข/kWh.

This follows wider developments across the Arab peninsula. Since the Doha United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2012, countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and the UAE have all announced significant plans to develop their renewable energy infrastructures.
