The plant will replace the 70-year-old nine-unit Kingston coal-fired facility. TVA will also build 100 MW of battery storage and up to 4 MW of solar generation. Allen Clare, Senior Vice President of Power Operations for TVA, said: “This energy complex is the most cost-effective option that offers the flexibility and reliability within the timeline to bring the replacement online.”

Scott Brooks, spokesman for TVA, said that the new CCGT units will begin operating before Kingston is retired in late 2027. They could burn up to 5 per cent hydrogen.
