Turkey’s General Assembly of Parliament has passed the Electricity Market Law, which is intended to lower electricity bills, support local production, and reduce the country’s dependence on energy imports. Complicated regulations for energy investors will also be eliminated, and the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) will extend its reach overseas.

The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) will request revision of unapproved tariffs. The regulated and offered electricity tariffs to be implemented in the near future will be arranged to include all costs and service charges, and will be later submitted to the EPDK for approval.

The law said that coal mine owners will be provided with an operational license to capture and use coal gas in mines for power generation, on the condition that the energy produced stay within the borders of the mine’s operational license. The amount of coal gas in a mine will be required to be at least 5 cubic metres per ton as a qualification before an operational license will be granted.
