Toshiba Corp has announced it intends to enter the solar power generation market via one of its subsidiaries with the aim of reaching 6.5 MW of capacity before the end of the fiscal year in March 2014.

The company will start solar power generation at a facility in Yokohama in the next week and plans to begin generation at Kikugawa in Shizuoka Prefecture and Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture in October, with another plant in Hyogo starting in January.
The four facilities' generation capacity will range from 1.5-2 MW, and together produce enough annual generation to supply 550 households.
Toshiba projects revenues from the solar power generation business at several hundred million yen (several million US$) for fiscal 2014.
