Toshiba Corporation has signed an MOU with Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) on a comprehensive partnership in geothermal power. The agreement will see the parties collaborate in power generation projects, including personnel development, according to a statement released by the MEMD.
Uganda has rich geothermal potential, estimated to be equivalent to 500 MW. Currently, about 60 per cent of Uganda’s power generation is from hydroelectric power, and the country has long promoted construction of hydropower plants. The statement said that adding geothermal power would contribute to supply stability and help meet rising demand growing at about 10 per cent annually.
