Tokyo Gas has announced it will install 19 offshore wind turbines near the eastern Japan coast from 2024. The wind turbines will be located in waters near the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, and will have a combined capacity of 159.6 MW. The start date of the project has yet to be determined.
The wind farm, which will be built around 1.6 km from Kashima Port, is also funded by Wind Power Group of Japan, and Vena Energy Holdings of Singapore.
Takashi Uchida, President of Tokyo Gas, said: “We aim to lead the growth of renewable energy, which will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.” He said that his company is committed to a stable power supply by balancing fluctuation in power generated by renewable energy with gas-fired power generation, its core business.
The Japanese Government has set a goal of increasing its offshore wind power generation to 45 GW in 2040, up from a current 20 MW.
