Togo’s Power Ministry has appointed Indian power giant NTPC as its project management consultant for about 300MW of solar power projects in the country.
Gurdeep Singh, Chief Managing Director of NTPC, said: “This renewable resource must be harnessed by International Solar Alliance (ISA) member countries as renewable energy makes it possible to supply electricity to people living in far-flung areas through distributed power supply model.” He underlined the importance of independent regulators, saying that prepaid smart metering helps in smooth billing and collection, and the governments need not invest in the projects that developers take care of.
Togo has set itself a plan to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, with a focus on capacity addition in solar power generation. The country has been requesting assistance from the ISA to develop solar capacity.
