Thailand’s Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency is expected to invite interested parties to submit proposals for a Napier grass-based electricity generation project.
Chiang Mai University, which the department hired as an advisor, is expected to finish drafting the terms of reference (TOR) for the project this month, including selection of planting locations and the qualifications of participants. Most of the selected locations are in the North, Northeast, and Central regions.
The National Energy Policy Council has raised its target for alternative energy sources from 9.2GW to 13.9GW under the revised Alternative Energy Development Plan. Targets for wind power were increased from 1.2GW to 1.8GW; solar power from 2GW to 3GW; biomass from 3.6GW to 4.8GW; rubbish from 160MW to 400MW; and biogas from 600MW to 3.6GW. As part of the measure, a dozen 1MW Napier grass-fired power stations will be piloted next year.
