Ryuichi Yoneyama, a doctor-lawyer who has never previously held office, was elected as Governor of Niigata on Sunday. He ran on the platform that he would not allow the Kashiwazakai-Kariwa nuclear power plant, owned by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to restart operations.

TEPCO was put under government control in 2012, and is vital to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s energy policy. Abe hopes to revive nuclear power generation to provide 30 per cent of Japan’s energy needs.

TEPCO’s share price fell 6.7 per cent in Tokyo.
