Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) has announced that it is considering a project to build one of Japan’s biggest offshore wind power plants. The generating capacity will be in excess of 1 GW, and will be located off Chosi, Chiba Prefecture.
TEPCO has said that it plans to increasingly develop renewable energy production, in order to help make up for the costs of decommissioning nuclear reactors and removing the remaining radioactive substances at Fukushima. TEPCO will spend around $9.2 billion to install about 200 fixed bottom wind turbines offshore, each unit generating over 5 MW. TEPCO hopes to secure stable profits by selling generated electricity through the feed-in tariff system.
