A report published by the independent climate think tank Ember stated that wind and solar are the fastest growing sources of energy, generating 10 per cent of the world’s energy in 2021. It also said that clean energy sources accounted for 38 per cent of the world’s total power supply last year, more than coal’s 36 per cent. The report noted that solar power generation rose 23 per cent in 2021 and wind generation rose by 14 per cent.

The Netherlands, Australia, and Vietnam are the countries the fastest to convert from heavy coal use to wind and solar. Denmark was the top country with the most use of wind and solar at 52 per cent. Ten countries generated over 25 per cent of their power from wind and solar.

Dave Jones, global lead for Ember, said: “Governments like the USA, Germany, UK, and Canada are so confident in clean energy that they are planning to shift their grid to 100 per cent clean electricity within the next decade and a half. But with coal still rising and electricity demand continuing to increase, all governments with carbon intensive grids now need to act with that same boldness and ambition.”
