Acting on a proposal made by the Economic Development Minister, Basil Rajapaksa, the Sri Lanka cabinet has decided to recognise the 2 x 250 MW capacity coal power project at Sampoor as a Strategic Development Project. The joint venture partners for this project are the Ceylon Electricity Board and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation, investing $500 million.

Construction is to begin this year, and the plant is scheduled to be linked to the national grid in 2017.
